Japanese Papers - Chiyogami And Katazome-shi
We use a variety of papers in our jewelry designs. Although we love them all, our very favorite papers are those from Japan. If you're feeling inspired by these gorgeous patterns, there are all kinds of ways you can be creative with paper. Want to get your hands on some beautiful Japanese paper right now? Check out these swell online paper shops.
Japanese Chiyogami Paper
Chiyogami, also commonly referred to as Yuzen, is a beautiful silkscreened paper made in Japan. Many of the incredible colors and patterns found in Chiyogami have been inspired by Kimono textile designs. We love the lush floral patterns - chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and hibiscus.
Chiyogami paper is filled with images of nature - bamboo, climbing vines, rippled waves, dragonflies, and cranes - as well as more abstract and geometric prints. The Japanese crane, one of the most fantastically graceful birds, is a symbol of long bountiful life, and good fortune. |
Japanese Katazome-shi Paper
Katazome-shi translates to "stencil-dyed paper". These Japanese prints have a soft, ethereal quality, and are created using traditional kimono-printing techniques. The paper is smooth with a cloth-like texture. The designs span across the paper in a flowing, organic manner, giving each glazed paper bead we create its own unique pattern. Here is a rainbow sampler of Katazome-shi lotus flowers. |
